<p>WASTEWATER TECHNICIAN I 61820</p> <p>(Competitive)</p> <p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS</p> <p>The work involves responsibility for the collection and handling of representative environmental samples (wastewater, freshwater, biosolids, soils, air as well as biota including fish, plankton, macroinvertebrates, etc.) in accordance with prescribed collection procedures; transporting these samples to laboratory personnel for analysis; and, keeping accurate records of the location and time of their collection.</p> <p>An employee in this class is expected to operate and maintain all environmental quality monitoring/collection equipment utilized in the collection of samples, including pH meters, flow meters, water quality data sondes, dissolved oxygen, and temperature readings, etc. An employee in this class is also responsible for compiling and categorizing industries' water usage records and sanitary district taxes by performing routine calculations and recording the compiled information into a computer data source. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Wastewater Technician II and is reviewed through informal consultation. Does related work as required.</p> <p>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES</p> <p>Collects lake, river, and stream samples and obtains the necessary in-situ measurements by operating field equipment to gather dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, pH, flow data, and other environmental parameters.</p> <p>Collects samples from waste treatment facilities and industrial/sanitary sewers and records readings of flow rates for use in flow compositing samples.</p> <p>Operates and calibrates sampling equipment, flow measuring devices and other field equipment at industrial waste discharges on a regular basis.</p> <p>Transports samples to laboratory and creates/maintains records and prepares samples for analysis.</p> <p>Maintains records in accordance with prescribed procedures to ensure admissibility in legal actions.</p> <p>Reads sewer plans and physically examines sewers to confirm their course and destination.</p> <p>Locates sources of incompatible discharge such as oil and industrial toxic waste into the public sewer system.</p> <p>Makes necessary repairs to field equipment such as automated samplers, conductivity meters, pH meters, flow meters, etc.</p> <p>Enters wastewater sampling records and information into a computer database and reviews computer printouts of sampling and analytical results.</p> <p>Conducts industrial plant interviews and inspections.</p> <p>Operates the Waste Hauler Control facility.</p> <p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS</p> <p>Some knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and methods common to sampling, measuring and analyzing environmental samples.</p> <p>Some knowledge of procedures and safety precautions in the collection of representative samples.</p> <p>Ability to operate and maintain all equipment used in environmental sampling.</p> <p>Ability to record and maintain sample collection data and sampling results.</p> <p>Ability to recognize substandard samples, (such as, oily, odored, or discolored) and report this to the supervisor.</p> <p>Ability to communicate effectively in order to obtain necessary information regarding sample collection sites, techniques, etc.</p> <p>Ability to walk in an outdoor environment with uneven surfaces and climb multiple stairs, ladders and inclines.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate's degree in Engineering Science, Environmental Science, Public Health Technology, Environmental Health Technology, Water and Wastewater Technology Option of Science Laboratory Technology, Water Resources Option of Civil Engineering Technology or Natural Science (biology, chemistry or physics); or,</p> <p>B. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in water or wastewater analysis, control, treatment, or sampling, or natural science (biology, chemistry or physics); or,</p> <p>C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).</p> <p>SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT</p> <p>When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State CDL or Non-CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.</p> <p>07/2017 Revised</p>
