<p>ESSENTIAL TASKS</p> <p>Perform biological surveillance in an assigned area of the county. Secure mosquito control data from light traps and rain gauges. Perform taxonomic keying of mosquitoes. Prepare and maintain statistical data for assigned area.</p> <p>Participate with the DHEC Bureau of Laboratories West Nile Surveillance program which includes submitting mosquitoes from trap collections and birds acceptable for testing. Assist with vector-borne disease investigations when they occur.</p> <p>Conduct breeding site surveys. Treat sites with appropriate larvicides & adulticides or recommends necessary action. Update breeding site logs and maps.</p> <p>Investigate requests for spraying (ULV Calls).</p> <p>Conducts community surveys to determine level of container-breeding activity and eliminate breeding sources. Participate with community outreach events & education projects.</p> <p>May also be responsible for: coordinating community outreach projects, assisting with coordinating school and educational programs, maintaining Hazard Communication Program (HCP) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) records, conducting weekly check of all buildings and vehicles to ensure NPDES compliance, driving spray truck, ensuring proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment, ensuring that all vehicles and equipment are serviced according to schedule and that sprayers and equipment are installed properly.</p> <p>Provide technical assistance for identification and control of vectors other than mosquitoes to citizens/property owners. Assist telephone and walk-in clients with program inquiries.</p> <p>Operate various types of vehicles & equipment including ULV machines, hand sprayers, backpack blowers, dusters, hand tools, etc. which are used for the control of mosquitoes. Ensure proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment.</p> <p>Compile/submit required forms to document individual and program activities. Assist with documentation for monthly and annual reports and statistics.</p> <p>INVOLVEMENT WITH DATA, PEOPLE, AND THINGS</p> <p>DATA INVOLVEMENT:</p> <p>Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion to determine data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.</p> <p>This individual must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications - including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They must be able to create workbooks & spreadsheets when needed in Excel; compose letters and other documents using proper grammar in Word. Experience with GIS is preferred but not required.</p> <p>PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:</p> <p>This person must be able to effectively communicate with citizens and other agencies' personnel, on the phone and in person. They are also expected to participate in team responses with the department when needed.</p> <p>INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:</p> <p>Requires the ability to operate, maneuver or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, or materials used to perform essential functions. Needs to have moderate mechanical aptitude in order to complete required maintenance duties on equipment or make repairs when necessary. They must be able to assist with the calibration of equipment in preparation for treatments. This individual must also be familiar with Microsoft Office applications.</p> <p>COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>REASONING REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems. Also requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measureable or verifiable criteria.</p> <p>MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; the ability to interpret graphs; and the ability to perform basic algebraic calculations which sometimes involves basic geometry.</p> <p>LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Individual must be able to communicate with citizens clearly, orally in English. Spanish is not required but could be beneficial.</p> <p>MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Must be able to use independent discretion in order to accomplish tasks and good judgment to make appropriate decisions that will comply with rules and laws.</p> <p>VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION</p> <p>VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:</p> <p>An associate's degree in the natural or physical sciences or related field.</p> <p>SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:</p> <p>Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess or obtain within 1 year of employment a SC Pesticide Applicator's license in Category 8 - Public Health.</p> <p>The failure to obtain and maintain both licenses will represent justification for termination with Vector Control.</p> <p>EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>None.</p> <p>AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12 - 25 pounds). Note: we maneuver items that weight more than this moderate weight, such as 55-gallon drums of insecticides, 40-lb bags of granular insecticides, catch basin & manhole lids, tents, etc.</p> <p>ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:</p> <p>Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, or animal/insect bites.</p> <p>SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
