<p>Job Goal: The mission of The Calculus Project is to use research-supported strategies to increase the representation and success of Black, Hispanic and low-income students in advanced mathematics. There are seven distinct components that support students year-round, and one of these is pre-teaching in the summer. Somerville Public Schools is in partnership with the Calculus Project Organization to bring the TCP program to our students.</p> <p>At TCP, Peer Mentors/Teachers play a supportive role in our academic community. Working closely with the Lead Teacher and Associate Teacher, you will provide academic support in the classroom and assist with various program activities.</p> <p>Qualifications/Expectations:</p> <ul> <li>SHS students or recent SHS alumni who (1) have participated in TCP in past summers, (2) are passionate about STEM, and/or (3) are aspiring mathematics teachers are encouraged to apply </li><li>Communicate effectively with students and staff from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds </li><li>Treat all staff and students with respect at all times, identify biased and hateful incidents, and respond appropriately </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Experience interning in a mathematics classroom or working with youth in a summer program is a plus </li><li>Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus </li></ul> <p>Primary responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Academic Support: Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce problem-solving skills and clarify concepts as they work on assignments. </li><li>Program Assistance: Support the overall TCP experience by joining in on field trips, advisory sessions, and other planned activities. </li><li>Role Modeling: Serve as a positive influence and a good role model for younger students, embodying the spirit and values of The Calculus Project. </li><li>Collaborative Engagement: Assist the instructional team wherever needed, contributing to a supportive, connected, and dynamic learning environment. </li></ul> <p>Other Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Collaborate with a grade level team that includes a Lead Teacher, Associate Teacher, and other peer teachers </li><li>Support the Lead Teacher with a group of 20-25 students daily </li><li>Create a nurturing learning environment, maintain high behavioral and academic standards, and foster a culture of collaboration and exploration </li><li>Work with Lead Teacher to enforce classroom/group norms during direct instruction and proactively support students during small group practice in developing their conceptual understanding and procedural proficiency in topics from Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, or Pre-Calculus </li><li>Provide support as needed in a daily advisory block to build community and strengthen relationships between students and staff </li><li>As applicable, attend class daily after teaching responsibilities have been met, to pre-learn topics in Precalculus, Calculus, or Statistics in preparation for the school year </li><li>Collaborate with other peer mentors/teachers to plan activities </li><li>Facilitate the Count Forward curriculum, where students learn about accomplishments of STEM professionals of color. </li><li>Help to chaperone a small group of students during field trips </li><li>Attend up to 1.5hr/week of daily debriefs with TCP summer staff </li><li>Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required </li></ul> <p>Terms of Employment:</p> <p>Seasonal/Yearly Employment</p> <p>July 7, 2025 - August 1, 202</p> <p>Hourly Rate: $17.72 per hour worked</p> <p>Location: EAST SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL</p> <p>Monday-Friday, 5 days per week</p> <p>9am-2:30pm</p> <p>Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 23, 2025</p> <p>Position Reports to: TCP Director & Co-Directors of Summer Programs</p> <p>The Somerville Public School does not discriminate in its programs, facilities or employment of educational opportunities on the bases of race, color, age, religion, disability, preganancy, home status, martital/civil union status, sex/gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship status, place of birth, national origin, ancestry, cultural identity, genetics or military status, and does not tolerate any form of retaliation, or bias-based intimidation, threat or harassment that demeans individuals' group or interferes with their ability to learn or work.</p>
