The mission is to educate high school students about careers in healthcare and life sciences and help connect them to achievable, concrete next steps after high school graduation.</p> <p>Job Description</p> <p>The Health Careers Coordinator is a member of the team serving under the director of STEM partnerships at the Netter Center for Community Partnerships. This initiative is part of the University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) program of the Netter Center. Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University's local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, and service. These partnerships help improve the quality of life on campus and in the community. The Netter Center works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world.</p> <p>Major components of the program include school day, after school and summer programming (which occurs both at the schools and at Penn); connecting students to health careers internships and helping develop new health careers internships; and further developing and maintaining an alumni network. Implementing these components requires the ability to recruit and engage high school students and their families; a knowledge of West Philadelphia neighborhood schools and ability to collaborate with school leadership, teachers and counselors; a knowledge of Penn and ability to recruit, orient and retain undergraduate and graduate students who serve as mentors; and the ability to help build and refine the program's curriculum.</p> <p>The Netter Center and its partners collaborate to provide mentorship and education at various levels:</p> <ul> <li>High school students learn with and from undergraduate and graduate students </li><li>Undergraduates learn from graduate students </li><li>Graduate students are guided by faculty </li></ul> <p>The program allows college students, veterinary trainees, physicians-in-training, and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania to contribute meaningfully to the local community while simultaneously advancing teaching, learning, and research at Penn. High school students in the program participate in a hands-on health sciences curriculum and receive exposure to health-related career paths as well as mentorship and academic support.</p> <p>Duties/Job Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Recruit, mentor, and retain high school student participants. Help build community amongst high school students. Work with parents and guardians to inform and engage them throughout the program. Connect high school students with internships. Help connect students to post-secondary opportunities, including supporting their college and career applications. </li><li>Recruit, train, and mentor Penn students. This includes undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Build relationships with Penn student groups that may support the implementation and/or growth of the program. Recruit professionals who can teach Penn students youth engagement, classroom management, and curricular design strategies during short training sessions. </li><li>Administer all aspects of the program. This includes contacting and scheduling a wide range of partners for program events and program planning meetings. Events and meetings can require catering, transportation, rentals, making room reservations, as well as tracking, ordering, and organizing all supplies. Help student and staff hires get necessary clearances. Distribute stipends to youth. </li><li>Help build and refine curriculum for fall, spring, and summer programming. Find new speakers or collaborators for career exposure events. Identify and develop new internship sites for youth. Help connect youth to career pathways programs. </li><li>Connect and coordinate with partner teachers from four partner high schools. Serve as a representative and advocate for the program before the leadership of the partner schools. </li><li>Help conduct program evaluation, which includes working with program participants, partners and an evaluation team to help identify key questions; help collect program materials, surveys and other data. Work with program partners to produce publications for conferences, journals and news articles. Communicate with stakeholders at Penn and funders about the successes and aspirations of the program. This will involve help with grant reports, program evaluation, and potentially work with members of the press who wish to write articles about the program. </li><li>Perform additional duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>This position is contingent upon grant funding.</p> <p>Qualifications:</p> <p>Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience working with university-community partnerships and specifically community schools and/or university-assisted community schools is required. Experience working in West Philadelphia public schools or similar urban neighborhood public schools is required. Demonstrated ability to: (a) Establish strong collaborative working-relationships with school-based and university-based partners, (b) Foster mentoring relationships with high school students, (c) Recruit, organize, and support undergraduate students in school-based and research-hospital settings, (d) Recruit and support high school students for program participation, (e) Support year-round programming, (f) Create organizational structures to support programming as needed, and (g) Implement logistics for scheduling, transportation, supplies, and food orders.</p> <p>A background or interest in career education and career pathways development is a plus.
