<p>Lab Supervisor</p> <p>Job Summary:</p> <p>Indiana Packers Corporation has an opportunity available for a Lab Supervisor. This is a hands-on position, with additional managerial responsibilities, reporting to the Food Safety Manager. The Lab Supervisor will oversee 4 technicians in a 365 day/year onsite laboratory for USDA pork harvest facility. Lab and testing functions include raw pork product and production area environmental testing, wastewater sampling for environmental compliance, and compositional testing of rendering products.</p> <p>The Lab Supervisor will distribute lab results to the Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams and works closely with the Food Safety and Quality Assurance department and management. This position is based in the lab, duties will include regular visits to plant production areas regularly. The Lab Supervisor will be on a 1st shift schedule and has responsibility for all shifts.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Hiring, training, scheduling, and leading lab technicians for 2 daily shifts and weekends </li><li>Well versed in and able to personally complete lab tasks </li><li>Promote and enforce safety culture and requirements of all lab personnel. </li><li>Ensure the use of approved testing methods that conform with industry standards and regulatory requirements. </li><li>Manage lab testing results, documentation and data, databases, and trend reporting to support compliance with SQF and regulatory agencies. </li><li>Develop and maintain procedures to monitor process performance to ensure product shelf-life, food safety, and continuous improvement through feedback and new technologies. </li><li>Provide advice and expertise on topics of microbiology and food chemistry for practical applications to the enterprise. </li><li>Manage laboratory supply inventory and budget. </li><li>Collect samples from plant production areas regularly </li><li>Explore and coordinate external lab testing services as needed. </li><li>Maintain lab equipment service, calibration, and maintenance schedules and agreements. </li><li>Oversee product testing including, but not limited to, pre-op micro swabs, E. coli, APC, Peroxide Value Testing, Protein, Moisture, Fat analysis and product shelf-life testing. </li><li>Work closely with Regulatory Engineers to perform and oversee testing on well water, storm water, and wastewater samples collected for environmental compliance. </li><li>Occasionally collect outdoor water samples. </li><li>Manage testing of FDA regulated pet food samples. </li><li>All employees are expected to adhere to their scheduled working hours and attend work consistently to ensure smooth operations and effective teamwork. </li></ul> <p>Requirements</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in food science, microbiology, or related technical field </li><li>Food Laboratory experience with strong background in GLPs and aseptic lab technique. </li><li>Familiarity with common spoilage microorganisms and pathogenic microorganisms of concern in meat products. </li><li>Familiarity and/or experience with the use of various media types and their applications for the selection, detection, and enumeration of microorganisms. </li><li>Ability to understand and interpret technical documents such as laboratory procedures, equipment manuals, and scientific articles </li><li>Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, data management, analysis, and reporting. </li><li>Familiarity with Power BI beneficial but not required. </li><li>Must be available to work some weekends and holidays. </li><li>Must have strong leadership capabilities with excellent communication skills, allowing for good working relationships within close working environments. </li><li>Must thrive in dynamic situations, embracing changing circumstances and be flexible to change direction as needed. </li></ul> <p>Work Environment:</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions on the site including exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud and hearing protection is required. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in cold, hot, and outdoor conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust.</p> <p>Physical Demand:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.</p> <p>Work is primarily performed in an office & plant environment requiring the ability to sit, talk, hear, frequent walking, standing, and sitting; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
