<p>Job Summary</p> <p>The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Laboratory Technician. This is a full time, 10-month (August 16-June 14) (.833 FTE) Lab Technician position, reporting to the Chief Business Officer, working closely with the Neuroscience Department Chair.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>The incumbent will work with faculty in the department to provide support for undergraduate laboratory courses, manage equipment and materials for teaching and research labs and be the contact person for lab safety and cataloging in the department. The incumbent will also assist with introductory and upper-level laboratory classes. The incumbent will serve as a backup for the animal caretaker. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:</p> <p>Essential Job Functions</p> <ul> <li>Prepare, or produce and set up materials for introductory and advanced classes in consultation with faculty. </li><li>Provide instructional support for teaching laboratory courses, including but not limited to, maintenance and lab prep of mammalian tissue and bacteria cultures, rodent surgical and behavioral methods, lab prep of tissue cultures, electrophysiology, human behavior experiments, psychophysics, and electroencephalography (EEG) labs, and may involve participation or assistance in lab class sessions, etc. </li><li>Assist in development of teaching laboratory experiments. </li><li>Test, maintain, and coordinate repair of teaching and research equipment. </li><li>Maintain department resources including ordering, tracking, and monitoring chemical and other lab inventory utilizing institutional and departmental software. </li><li>Work with the animal caretaker to ensure animals are ordered or bred. </li><li>Provide backup assistance to the animal caretaker including feeding animals, cleaning, and maintaining facilities and equipment. </li><li>Handle rodents and conduct animal surgery, anesthesia and euthanasia in a humane way following standard operating procedures and college protocols. </li><li>Coordinate and train students on the use of equipment and software. Hire, train, and direct the work of a few student employees, as needed, to support teaching labs. </li><li>Work with hazardous materials in a controlled environment while maintaining strict safety standards and procedures. </li><li>Learn and refine new laboratory skills and techniques such as new scientific techniques, software for data analysis, etc. </li><li>Work with the Chair of Neuroscience department and facilities manager of the Science center to maintain chemical inventory and safety guidelines for the department. </li></ul> <p>Marginal Job Functions</p> <p>Other duties as assigned.</p> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <p>High school diploma and college level coursework or a combination of experience and education which includes courses related to neuroscience, particularly biology, chemistry or psychology, or related laboratory work; good laboratory skills, basic computer skills, and the ability to learn new programs, experimental models, and procedures; knowledge of scientific instrumentation; ability to work independently with strong organizational skills; ability to interact well with a diverse range of individuals including students, staff, and faculty. Favorable references.</p> <p>Desired Qualifications</p> <p>Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry; Psychology, or related scientific discipline, experience or willingness to learn how to work with mammalian and bacterial tissue cultures and other in vitro experimental models, animals such as rodents, C. elegans (worms) and crayfish, humans, etc.</p> <p>Quick Link for Posting https://jobs.oberlin.edu/postings/16065 Compensation</p> <p>This is a Pay Group 6 Lab Technician position with an hourly rate of $26.53 per hour or the appropriate transfer or contractual rate and includes an excellent benefits package.</p> <p>Special Instructions to Applicants</p> <p>All applicants will be required to pass assessment testing prior to the interview process, and will need to upload a cover letter, resume and list of references.</p>
