The division investigates, prosecutes, and adjudicates complaints of discrimination and works to eliminate barriers to equal treatment and opportunity for all New Yorkers.</p> <p>The Summer Legal Intern will work closely with attorneys and investigators at the NYSDHR to assist with legal and investigatory tasks related to discrimination complaints. Interns will gain hands-on experience in civil rights law and the workings of a state agency dedicated to upholding human rights.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Assist with legal research and analysis related to civil rights, discrimination law, and ongoing investigations and/or policy and legislation. </li><li>Draft memoranda, reports, and summaries related to discrimination complaints and investigations. </li><li>Support attorneys with case preparation, including reviewing and analyzing evidence, witness statements, and legal precedents. </li><li>Observe and participate in meetings and hearings, including those related to the investigation and resolution of discrimination complaints. </li><li>Prepare written recommendations and assist in preparing case files for litigation or settlement. </li><li>Engage in public outreach and educational efforts, including developing informational materials or presentations. </li><li>Attend training sessions and seminars to enhance understanding of New York State Human Rights Law and civil rights protections. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school, with a demonstrated interest in civil rights, employment law, or public interest law.</p> <ul> <li>Strong research, writing, and analytical skills. </li><li>Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. </li><li>Excellent organizational and communication skills. </li><li>Familiarity with New York State Human Rights Law and anti-discrimination statutes is a plus but not required. </li><li>Commitment to public service and social justice. </li></ul> <p>Additional Comments</p> <p>Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.</p> <p>Name Human Resources / CG</p> <p>Telephone</p> <p>Fax</p> <p>Email Address HRresumes@dhr.ny.gov</p> <p>Address</p> <p>Street Division of Human Rights</p> <p>Agency Bldg 1, Empire State Plaza</p> <p>City Albany</p> <p>State NY</p> <p>Zip Code 12220</p> <p>Notes on ApplyingInterested candidates should submit the following documents:</p> <ul> <li>A cover letter expressing interest in the internship and highlighting relevant experience. </li><li>A current resume. </li><li>A writing sample (legal writing preferred). </li><li>Contact information for two references. </li></ul> <p>Please include the Vacancy ID and Title of the position you are applying for in your email.</p>
