The IPS School Police Department plays a vital role in building strong relationships with students, staff, and the community, while also ensuring a proactive and professional approach to school safety.</p> <p>IPS is seeking dedicated, community-oriented individuals to join our team as School Police Officers. This role requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to student-centered policing. Officers serve as positive role models, respond to safety concerns, and work collaboratively with school leaders to maintain a secure environment. IPS provides opportunities for career growth, specialized training, and a meaningful way to serve the Indianapolis school community.</p> <p>ROLE(S) - KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>School Police Officer</p> <p>Summary:</p> <p>School Police Officers are responsible for ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors while fostering positive relationships with the school community. Officers provide crime prevention, emergency response, and investigative support to maintain a safe and supportive educational environment.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Build rapport with students and staff, serving as a positive role model. </li><li>Utilize alternatives to arrest and de-escalation techniques to promote positive student outcomes. </li><li>Patrol school buildings and grounds, ensuring a visible security presence. </li><li>Respond to emergency situations, disturbances, and security concerns in a timely manner. </li><li>Conduct investigations into incidents occurring on school property, preparing reports as necessary. </li><li>Assist with bus duty, field trips, and school events, ensuring student safety. </li><li>Participate in school safety planning, collaborating with administrators and community stakeholders. </li><li>Maintain confidentiality of reports, records, and sensitive information. </li><li>Attend required training and professional development to enhance policing strategies within schools. </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or GED required. </li><li>Previous law enforcement experience and experience working with youth preferred, but not required. </li><li>Must meet Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board physical fitness requirements upon arrival at the academy. </li><li>Must hold or be able to obtain Indiana Law Enforcement Certification. </li><li>Ability to remain calm under pressure, think critically, and de-escalate conflicts. </li><li>Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build trust within the school community. </li><li>Must be available for various shifts, including school events, evenings, and weekends as needed. </li></ul> <p>Spanish and/or bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
