Job Summary

The Departments of Dance and Africana Studies at Oberlin College invite applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in Africana Dance and Integrated Arts Practice. We seek an accomplished artist-scholar whose cross-disciplinary scholarship, artistic research, and movement practice emphasize African diasporic traditions, broadly defined to include Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Afro-European communities. Candidates with demonstrable artistic research profile and significant record of choreographic works or publications engaging critical cross-cultural or decolonial perspectives are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to practitioners who demonstrate the potential to develop an active research program that engages undergraduate students. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning Fall 2025, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

About

Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private, four-year, highly selective national liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio, and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Together, the two divisions enroll approximately 2900 students. Oberlin College was the first college in the US to make interracial education and co-education central to its mission. The College continues to view a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational environment as essential to the excellence of its academic program. Among liberal arts colleges, Oberlin is a national leader in successfully placing graduates into PhD programs.

Dance at Oberlin combines experiential, practice-based pedagogy with the academic rigor expected across the college. Open to all students, our courses foster intellectual curiosity, risk-taking, and creative exploration. With over 500 enrollments annually and hundreds more engaging in productions and events, dance is a high-demand field of study. The department supports 26 majors and 18 minors, providing personalized mentorship through a distinctive curriculum. Graduates pursue careers as dancers and choreographers, advance to graduate studies in dance theory, education, and medicine, or engage in dance socially and recreationally. The curriculum spans four areas-physical techniques, creation and performance, somatics, and critical inquiry.

Oberlin's Africana Studies Department, one of the first of its kind at a liberal arts college, remains at the forefront of exploring the histories, cultures, politics, and experiences of African-descended peoples across Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, Europe, and the Americas. Recognizing the central role of Africana dance as cultural literacy, the department established a fine arts concentration for its majors and minors in the 1990s. Our students-with approximately 400 enrollments annually are future creatives and change-makers who understand that learning is not just about understanding the world but actively shaping it. The department supports 17 majors and 10 minors and offers courses that serve students in various majors across Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. The Black Arts Program in Africana Studies aligns with the newly inaugurated Integrated Arts Curriculum.

This joint position is evenly distributed between the departments to support the interdisciplinary nature of both Africana Studies and Dance. It provides essential guidance for dance majors following the African diasporic pathway and Africana Studies majors specializing in visual and performing arts while enriching Oberlin's general education curriculum.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) in the general area of Africana Dance and Integrated Arts Practice, including a mix of introductory and advanced technique classes, creative workshops, and theory courses on dance history and contemporary practice. Additionally, they will contribute to departmental activities in both departments, such as directing concerts and mentoring student choreography.

The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, mentoring undergraduate research and service on committees.

Qualifications

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the PhD or equivalent terminal degree (in hand by the first semester of the academic year 2025). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching and the ability to perform high-quality cross-disciplinary research. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable. Oberlin College is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The incumbent will bring an understanding of or experience working with underrepresented and diverse academic populations. Oberlin is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service.
